Cowgirls’ Win Streak Snapped by Utah State in Four Sets
The Wyoming Cowgirls saw their five-match winning streak come to an end Thursday night inside the UniWyo Sports Complex, falling to Utah State in four sets by scores of 25-18, 17-25, 16-25, and 15-25.
Wyoming (8-8, 4-1 MW) opened the match strong, never trailing in the opening frame to grab an early advantage. But Utah State (8-7, 5-0 MW) took control from that point on, swinging with impressive consistency in the final three sets — hitting no worse than .324 the rest of the way to stay unbeaten in conference play.
The Aggies limited the Cowgirls’ rhythm and dictated the pace after the first set, trailing just once in the second frame and only twice in each of the last two. Wyoming hit .146 on the night compared to Utah State’s .248, and although the Cowgirls doubled up the Aggies in total blocks (16–8), they were outpaced in digs (68–52) and kills (64–38).
Sarah Holcomb and Paige Lauterwasser led the Wyoming attack with 11 kills apiece, the only Cowgirls to reach double digits. Holcomb was a force at the net, posting her sixth career double-double with 11 kills and 11 blocks — including five solo. Lauterwasser added her seventh double-double of the season with 11 kills and 15 digs, tying for the team lead in digs alongside Skylar Erickson, who also chipped in two assists.
Setter Maddy Stucky dished out 17 assists and two aces, while Sara Quigley contributed 15 assists and 10 digs for another Cowgirl double-double.
Wyoming will aim to start a new streak on Saturday when they close their homestand against Boise State. First serve is set for noon inside the UniWyo Sports Complex.
