Cowgirls Open ITA Mountain Regionals with Strong Start in Provo
The Wyoming Cowgirls women’s tennis team came out swinging on the opening day of the ITA Mountain Regional Championships on Tuesday in Provo, Utah, hosted by BYU. Wyoming secured three singles victories and one doubles win to set a solid tone for the week’s competition.
Leading the charge was sophomore Serina Abriola, who turned in an impressive performance with two marathon singles victories and a clutch doubles win. Abriola battled through back-to-back three-set matches in singles play, showing both endurance and determination.
In her opening round, she edged New Mexico State’s Emma Petton in a tight contest, taking the match 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (10-8). Later that evening, Abriola rallied once again — this time against Utah’s Kamea Medora — prevailing 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the Round of 16 in the qualifying bracket.
Wyoming’s Silver Bijlsma also delivered a strong showing, opening her tournament with a dominant 6-3, 6-3 win before narrowly falling in a hard-fought three-set second-round match.
In doubles play, Abriola paired up with Anastasiia Kochelaevskaia for an 8-7 (7-5) victory, giving the Cowgirls a boost heading into the next round.
Competition at the ITA Mountain Regionals will continue Wednesday in Provo, as Wyoming looks to build on a promising start and push more players deeper into the tournament.
