Cowgirls Battle Ranked Opponents on Opening Day of TCU Fight in the Fort
FORT WORTH, Texas (Sept. 11, 2025) – The Wyoming Cowgirls opened play at the TCU Fight in the Fort on Thursday with two tough tests against nationally ranked programs. Wyoming pushed No. 23 Missouri to four sets in the morning session before falling in straight sets to the host, No. 15 TCU, later in the evening.
Morning Match vs. Missouri
The Cowgirls showed plenty of grit against the Tigers, splitting the first two sets to even the match at 1-1. After Missouri regained the lead with a third-set win, Wyoming nearly forced a decisive fifth frame. The Cowgirls held set point at 28-27 in the fourth, but Missouri responded with three unanswered points to secure the 30-28 win and close out the match. Final set scores were 14-25, 25-20, 18-25, and 28-30.
Senior outside hitter Paige Lauterwasser paced the Wyoming offense with a career-best 18 kills while adding 13 digs for her second double-double of the season. Sarah Holcomb nearly recorded one of her own, finishing with nine kills and 11 blocks, while Addy Thorington chipped in eight kills. Defensively, Skylar Erickson collected 15 digs, and newcomer Maddy Stucky impressed in her debut with 16 assists and 10 digs.
Evening Match vs. TCU
In the nightcap, Wyoming faced the 15th-ranked Horned Frogs in front of a raucous home crowd. The Cowgirls struggled to find rhythm offensively, hitting just .096 as TCU controlled the match in three sets. Lauterwasser again led Wyoming with nine kills, while Claire Wagstaff and Holcomb added five and four, respectively.
At the net, Holcomb and Addy Cook each registered five blocks. Erickson continued her standout day with 16 more digs, and Stucky turned in another double-double with 11 assists and 10 digs. Sara Quigley added eight assists and one of Wyoming’s two service aces.
TCU finished with a .228 hitting percentage and took advantage at the service line, piling up eight aces compared to Wyoming’s two. Both squads ended with nine blocks apiece.
What’s Next
Wyoming (2-5) will close out the tournament on Friday with a 3 p.m. matchup against Rhode Island. The Cowgirls will be eager to bounce back and build on the competitive stretches they showed against top-25 opposition
