The Wyoming men’s golf team put together a solid showing this week, finishing seventh overall at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational with a team score of 846 (-18) at Colorado National Golf Club.
Head coach Joe Jensen was encouraged by the performance and the progress his young roster is making.
“This was a really good event for us,” Jensen said. “We took a small step forward, beat some strong programs in our conference, and showed we’re improving from where we started the season. There’s still a long road ahead, but I’m proud of how the guys battled.”
Leading the way for the Cowboys was junior Brody Leid, who capped his tournament with an impressive 68 (-4) on Tuesday. His six birdies vaulted him into a tie for ninth at 207 (-9), marking the best finish of his career and his fourth top-25 showing.
“He found some confidence at Air Force, and now he’s really playing within himself,” Jensen added. “Brody’s a steady player, and it’s great to see him rewarded.”
Kristof Panke and Ryker Lind both tied for 27th at 211 (-5). Panke closed with a 71 (-1), while Lind posted an even-par 72 to secure the top finish of his young career.
Conner Scheich also delivered his best round of the event on the final day, carding a 69 (-3) with five birdies and an eagle to climb into a tie for 63rd at 217 (+1).
Kellen Ball’s score was dropped from the team tally; he tied for 94th at 230 (+14) after shooting a 74 (+2) on Tuesday.
Two Cowboys competed as individuals: Brody Knowlton tied for 63rd at 217 (+1) after an even-par 72, while Austin Barry placed 93rd at 229 (+13).
The team crown went to Arkansas State, who finished at 822 (-42), narrowly edging host Colorado (-41) and Long Beach State (-40). Arkansas State’s Thomas Schmidt dominated the individual field with a 194 (-22).
Wyoming will now get a short break before heading to the Oregon State Beaver Invitational, October 14-15.
